چکیده

Context. Applying photometric catalogs to the study of the population of the Galaxy is obscured by the impossibility to map directly photometric colors into astrophysical parameters. Most of all-sky catalogs like ASCC or 2MASS are based upon broad-band photometric systems, and the use of broad photometric bands complicates the determination of the astrophysical parameters for individual stars. Aims. This paper presents an algorithm for determining stellar astrophysical parameters (effective temperature, gravity and metallicity) from broad-band photometry even in the presence of interstellar reddening. This method suits the combination of narrow bands as well. Methods. We applied the method of interval-cluster analysis to finding stellar astrophysical parameters based on the newest Kurucz models calibrated with the use of a compiled catalog of stellar parameters. Results. Our new method of determining astrophysical parameters allows all possible solutions to be located in the effective temperature-gravity-metallicity space for the star and selection of the most probable solution.

Inferring stellar properties using colours, parallaxes and an HRD prior

Stellar parameters – effective temperature, metallicity, interstellar extinction etc. – are typically estimated from a spectrum or multiband photometry. I outline a probabilistic method for estimating stellar parameters which uses not only the spectral energy distribution but also the apparent magnitude, parallax (if available) and the strong constraints provided by the Hertzsprung–Russell Diag...

Large, deep surveys must typically rely on multiband photometry rather than spectroscopy for determining the astrophysical properties (APs) of stars. Yet designing an optimal photometric system for a wide range of objects is complex, because it must trade off conflicting scientific requirements. I present a new method for designing photometric systems and apply it to the Gaia Galac-tic survey s...

Bayesian inference of stellar parameters and interstellar extinction using parallaxes and multiband photometry

ABSTRACT Astrometric surveys provide the opportunity to measure the absolute magnitudes of large numbers of stars, but only if the individual line-of-sight extinctions are known. Unfortunately, extinction is highly degenerate with stellar effective temperature when estimated from broad band optical/infrared photometry. To address this problem, I introduce a Bayesian method for estimating the in...

The Mass Assembly and Star Formation Characteristics of Field Galaxies of Known Morphology.

We discuss a new method for inferring the stellar mass of a distant galaxy of known redshift based on the combination of a near-IR luminosity and multiband optical photometry. The typical uncertainty for field galaxies with I<22 in the redshift range 0<z<1 is a factor of 2. We apply this method to a newly constructed sample of 321 field galaxies with redshifts and Hubble Space Telescope morphol...

2 00 9 Spectral Energy Distribution Fitting : Application to Ly α - Emitting Galaxies ⋆

Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) fitting is a well-developed astrophysical tool that has recently been applied to high-redshift Lyα-emitting galaxies. If rest-frame ultraviolet through near-infrared photometry is available, it allows the simultaneous determination of the star formation history and dust extinction of a galaxy. Lyαemitter SED fitting results from the literature find star format...
